Your percentile is the start, not the answer
Getting your MHT-CET percentile is a milestone — but it is only the input. The real work is turning that number into an ordered list of colleges you would actually be happy to attend, ranked the way Maharashtra counselling reads them: strictly from your first choice downward. Get the order wrong and a seat you would have loved can be skipped, while a casual choice near the top wins the allotment.
This guide is a simple, repeatable method — and every step uses **official the CET Cell data**, not reputation or hearsay.
Step 1 — See what your percentile can actually reach

It is built on the CET Cell closing percentiles, so you are looking at what really happened, not at a coaching-centre list.
Cutoffs move year to year. To take one real example, COEP Pune closed a top branch around the 913 GOPENS rank band in 2025. A branch that looks out of reach on last year's number can come within range this year, and vice versa — which is exactly why you plan from data and keep some flexibility.
Step 2 — Build your list in three bands
A strong list has a gradient, not a cliff:
- Aspirational — closed slightly beyond your percentile last year. Worth listing;
cutoffs shift.
- Realistic — closed right around your percentile. This is where you will most
likely land.
- Safe — closed comfortably within your reach. These exist so you are never
left without an allotment.
If your first several choices all closed well beyond your percentile, you do not have a plan — you have a wish. Add safe options.
Step 3 — Decide branch vs college deliberately
Ask yourself honestly: your preferred branch at a lesser-known college, or a well-known college in a branch you are lukewarm about? There is no universal right answer — but there is a right answer for you, and settling it before counselling opens stops you flip-flopping under time pressure. Step 4 — Write it down, in order, on paper
Counselling is stressful, connections drop, and sessions time out. The most reliable tool in the room is a printed sheet with college codes, branch codes and your intended order.
