Percentile vs rank: what one percentile point costs in ranks

MHT-CET results come as a percentile, but seats are effectively claimed in rank order. So the question every student asks — "I got 97.2, is that good?" — really means "how many people are ahead of me?" The 2025 CAP cutoff records let us answer this precisely, because each published GOPENS cutoff carries both the closing percentile and the closing state rank of the last admitted candidate.

We extracted every row in the 2025 cutoff file where both numbers are published for the open category — 607 matched (percentile, rank) pairs spanning 99.76 down to 0.64 percentile — and mapped one onto the other.

The surprising finding: the exchange rate is almost flat

Compute the rank cost of one percentile point between consecutive rows and you get a strikingly stable number:

One percentile point costs roughly 3,000-3,600 state ranks, almost everywhere on the scale. That is simply the arithmetic of percentiles — each point is the same-sized slice of the candidate pool — but seeing it in real cutoff data kills two common myths:

  1. "Above 99, every decimal is huge." True in consequences, not in people. Going from 99.0 to 99.5 clears only ~1,800 candidates — but those 1,800 ranks are exactly where COEP, VJTI and PICT seats live. The stakes per rank explode at the top even though the density doesn't.
  2. "Between 90 and 95 nothing changes." Wrong — that band contains ~17,000 ranks (33,913 down to 17,258), and it is where most reputable Pune and Mumbai-region colleges close their open seats.

How to use this

  • Convert your percentile to an approximate rank: ranks behind you ≈ (100 − your percentile) × ~3,400. At 97.0 that puts you near rank 10,600 — matching the observed 10,648.
  • Then read college lists in rank terms. A college that closed at rank 14,000 in 2025 needed about 96.0; one that closed at 34,000 needed about 90.0.
  • Small percentile improvements matter most where cutoffs cluster. Between 98 and 99 there are only ~3,700 ranks, but dozens of sought-after CSE/IT programs close inside that sliver.

These figures are computed from 2025 CAP round cutoff data and will shift with each year's candidate count and difficulty. Always verify closing percentiles and ranks against the official cutoff lists published by the State CET Cell, Maharashtra (cetcell.mahacet.org) before making admission decisions.
